How to Flush Your Water Heater: A Simple Guide to Keep It Running Smoothly

Your water heater plays a crucial role in keeping your home comfortable, providing hot water for showers, laundry, and more. To keep it working efficiently and extend its lifespan, regular maintenance is key—especially flushing out sediment that can build up over time. Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you flush your water heater and ensure it continues to deliver the hot water you rely on.
Step 1: Turn Off Your Water Heater
Safety first! Before you start, make sure to turn off your water heater. If you have an electric water heater, switch off the power at the circuit breaker. For gas models, turn the gas valve to “pilot” mode. This simple step will prevent any accidents while you’re working.
Step 2: Shut Off the Cold Water Supply
Next, locate the cold water supply valve at the top of your water heater and turn it off. This stops new water from entering the tank, making it easier to flush out the sediment.
Step 3: Attach a Hose to the Drain Valve
Now, find the drain valve at the bottom of your water heater. Attach a garden hose to it, with the other end leading to a safe drainage area like a floor drain or your driveway. Remember, the water you’re draining can be very hot, so be cautious.
Step 4: Open the Drain Valve

With the hose securely attached, open the drain valve to start draining the water from the tank. To help the water flow faster, you can also open a hot water tap in your home, which will relieve pressure. Let the water flow out completely.

Step 5: Flush the Tank
Once the tank is empty, briefly turn the cold water supply back on to flush out any remaining sediment. You’ll know the tank is clean when the water running out of the hose is clear. This step helps keep your water heater running efficiently.
Step 6: Close the Drain Valve and Refill the Tank
After flushing, close the drain valve and remove the hose. Turn the cold water supply back on to refill the tank. Keep an eye on the open hot water tap—once water flows steadily from the tap, your tank is full again.
Step 7: Turn Your Water Heater Back On

Finally, once your tank is full, turn your water heater back on. For electric models, switch the power back on at the circuit breaker. For gas water heaters, return the gas valve to the “on” position. Allow the heater to fully warm up before using your hot water.
