What Drains do I have in my Home?

Understanding the different drains in your home can help you identify and address plumbing issues more effectively. Here’s a breakdown of the common drainage systems you might have:

Main line/Sewer Lateral

The main line, also known as the sewer lateral, is the largest drainpipe in your home. Located in the basement or crawlspace, it runs from your house, through the front yard, and connects to the city’s main sewer line under the street. This line is responsible for carrying all the sewage from your home to the city’s waste treatment plant. If you experience backups or issues with your main line, our expert plumbers are here to help! Main lines can be made from a variety of materials, and sometimes multiple types are used together. Common materials include ABS, PVC, Transite (Asbestos Pipe), Concrete, Orangeburg, Cast Iron, and Galvanized Steel.

Secondary Drain/Branch Line

Secondary drains, also known as branch lines, refer to all the smaller drainpipes in your home that aren’t part of the main sewer line. These include the kitchen drain, floor drain, laundry drain, bathroom sink drain, and tub or shower drain. These secondary drains connect to the main line, carrying wastewater from various parts of your home to the main sewer system. The materials used for these pipes are typically ABS, PVC, Galvanized Steel, Cast Iron, or Lead.

Understanding the different types of drains in your home can help you identify problems early and ensure that they’re addressed before they turn into bigger issues. If you’re dealing with any drainage problems, Bexar Plumbing is here to provide expert solutions to keep your home’s plumbing system running smoothly.

What Equipment Do We Use?

Sewer Camera
We use specialized cameras designed to navigate 1-1/2″ to 4″ drains, providing a clear view of the inside of your pipes. These cameras allow us to identify blockages, bellies, breaks, roots, and other issues that could be causing problems in your main line. With this technology, we can inspect, record, and document the condition of your pipes. You’ll have a visual record of any issues we find and the results of our services, giving you peace of mind and confidence in the work we do
Main line Auger (you might call it a “snake”)
We call this the “big auger”. It is a machine with a 5/8-3/4″ cable that spins at high speeds with cutter attachments on the head to penetrate the blockage and get the line flowing. As with all augers, this machine will remove some, but not all, roots and does not clear sludge off the walls of the pipe.
Secondary Auger

We call this our “medium auger”. It is used to clear drains 1½-2″ in diameter which are your secondary drains.

P-trap Auger
This is our “small auger”. It can go through the p-trap of your sink or shower. (The p-trap is that goose neck thing under your sink.)
Flex Shaft
This powerful, state-of-the-art tool is one of the latest additions to our arsenal. It features a chain with carbide tips designed to cut through roots, descale pipes, and remove grease buildup. The best part? We can use a camera simultaneously, allowing us to precisely locate and remove roots or other obstructions in your pipes with pinpoint accuracy.
Jetter

A sewer jetter, also known as a “hydro-jetter” or “water jetter,” is a powerful drain cleaning tool that uses high-pressure water jets to clear obstructions from residential and commercial drainpipes. It’s like pressure washing the inside of your pipes, leaving them nearly as clean as new. Hydro-jetters are particularly effective for main lines, kitchen drains, and laundry drains, which can accumulate grease and sludge over time, leading to blockages.

We take it a step further by using a special tip called “The Reaper.” This advanced tool is designed to tackle the toughest clogs and roots, pushing all debris forward into the city line. With “The Reaper” and our hydro-jetter, we can blast away stubborn sludge, ensuring your pipes flow smoothly and efficiently.

How We Take Care of Your Drain Problem

When you’re facing a main line backup, we know it’s a stressful situation. That’s why we start by thoroughly inspecting your line using a sewer camera. To do this, we’ll need to access the main line through a cleanout in your yard or home, or by temporarily removing a toilet. Once we have access, our specialized camera will travel through the line, giving us a clear view of its condition and revealing any blockages, roots, offsets, or other issues that might be causing the problem.

Our expert plumbers come fully prepared with the right tools to get your drains flowing smoothly again.

Sometimes, the line may be filled with water, making it difficult to see what’s going on. Think of it like trying to watch a movie while blindfolded—it’s hard to get any useful information! In this case, we’ll first clear the line to get the water moving again. Once the line is clear, we’ll perform a detailed camera inspection to pinpoint the issue.

There are times when a blockage is so severe that the line can’t be cleared right away. Even in these challenging situations, our experienced plumbers can often determine the problem based on their expertise. If needed, we’ll use our camera’s signal to locate exactly where the blockage is underground, ensuring we address the right spot.

No matter the challenge, our goal is to solve your drain problems quickly and effectively, so you can get back to your normal routine with confidence and peace of mind.
